A New Era of Fun at Tom’s Drive In: Pirate & 80s-Themed Mini Golf by Creative Works

We’re thrilled to announce our latest mini golf installation at Tom’s Drive In in Appleton, Wisconsin! This exciting project brings together two timeless themes, high-seas adventure and 80s nostalgia, to create an unforgettable indoor blacklight mini golf experience for guests of all ages.
Tom’s Drive In is a beloved fast-food chain in Northeast Wisconsin, known for its flame-broiled burgers, diverse menu, and welcoming service. With multiple locations across the region, it’s a go-to destination for quality food and a community-focused atmosphere. Now, their location off Richmond St is taking things to the next level by offering guests more than just a great meal.
A One-of-a-Kind Mini Golf Experience
We designed and installed an 18-hole blacklight mini golf course at this location, split between two immersive themes. The first nine holes transport players into a pirate-inspired environment. Stunning ocean murals, a giant turtle, a massive clam, and fierce sharks are just a few of the props that bring this section to life. Guests can putt their way around a treasure chest and through shipwrecked wall clusters.
One of the highlights is a gunport wall prop that’s motion-triggered, lighting up the muzzles and firing off cannonball sound effects when players approach. It’s an interactive moment that captures the spirit of swashbuckling adventure.
On the flip side, the remaining nine holes celebrate all things 80s, bringing in pop culture references and vibrant retro vibes. Imagine walking into an arcade-inspired world filled with:
- A giant gorilla standing on scaffolding
- A castle putt-thru structure inspired by vintage platformers
- A piranha flower and vaporwave car photo op
- A handheld game console with 8-bit golf CGI projection mapping
- And a classic 80s TV final hole that ties the experience together
It’s a blast from the past with a modern twist, designed to ignite nostalgia in adults and wonder in kids.
A Vision Years in the Making
Nick Salfity, the Creative Consultant who oversaw the project, shared just how meaningful this collaboration has been:
“I’m absolutely thrilled for Scot and the incredible renovations happening over there! Believe it or not, our conversations about this project began all the way back in 2019. It’s been a true pleasure working with him, and we’re so grateful to have played a part in bringing his mini golf vision to life. Scot has been exceptionally responsive and collaborative, always ensuring we had what we needed to keep the project moving forward smoothly.”
From the very first sketch to the final prop installation, this project is a testament to what happens when creativity, partnership, and passion come together.
More Than Just Mini Golf
With this installation, Tom’s Drive In becomes more than a food stop. It’s now a destination for family entertainment, date nights, and weekend fun. It’s a prime example of how location-based businesses can diversify their offerings and attract new customers by creating immersive experiences that can’t be found at home.
We’re proud to help make that vision a reality for Tom’s and their guests.
